Hello this is Mike P here from Road Trail Run. Today I'll be giving you a quick take
0:04
on the Altra Timp 5. I took these straight out of the box right into a run so let's get into it
0:21
There's some big changes here with the Timp 5. Let's get into the specs right away
0:25
The Timp 5 sits on 29 millimeters of Ego Max foam. That's of course a zero drop. Spec weight is 9.8
0:34
ounces 277 grams. In my US 9.5 I have similar 9.8 ounces 278 grams. The outsole gets a big upgrade
0:44
to Vibram Mega Grip. Retail price is $155 and it's available now. Timp 5 has Altra's standard
0:51
foot shape. I find it to be quite a bit snugger than the version 4. I had version 4 in a size 10
0:58
There was so much volume in the forefoot. I sized down to a 9.5 and this feels even more snug. Not
1:06
just due to sizing I think they tightened everything up quite a bit here. I'd say in
1:11
terms of the Altra spectrum of fits this leans more towards the superior side of the spectrum
1:18
as opposed to the wider more original style lone peak in Altra's lineup. Some Altra enthusiasts
1:26
might see this as a bit of a downgrade but for me I personally like it. I don't have a super wide
1:33
forefoot. Dialing it in just a notch works perfectly for me but I could see those that
1:39
truly need that wide ultra toe box I could see how you might be a little disappointed with this
1:44
update. Now Altra's reworked the upper a bit here. You have a kind of single layer mesh. They call it
1:51
a quick dry mesh. It's a little has a kind of a bit of a felty feel on the inside but it's free
1:58
of overlay so you don't have overlays underlays wrapping around anywhere. You get that kind of
2:03
security just from the material itself. They also reworked the heel area a bit. It's a little bit
2:09
lower and they went with a more normal type of heel padding in here. They had a little bit of
2:16
individual bolstering in the previous Timp 4. Also something that they've used in the Mont Blanc but
2:23
here they kind of just went the standard route and I think it works much better. The Timp 4 tended to
2:28
be a little bit looser around the ankle collar for me. Let in a little bit of rocks and debris and
2:33
didn't have quite as much heel hold as I would have liked. This one feels much better on the run
2:39
and now on to the big feature update which really caught my attention. Vibram mega grip on the
2:45
outsole. Timp 4's max track outsole was probably the biggest downside of the Timp 4. The lugs were
2:53
just flat on the bottom. Didn't really grip as well even on dry terrain and the lugs were just
3:01
shallow overall so you didn't grip in loose terrain. It was just I didn't really get where
3:07
they were going there. The Vibram mega grip here is just a big update. Mega grip tried and tested
3:14
Nice spaced out lugs here. This should be a big update. They felt much better on my first run
3:20
The other big improvement with the Timp 5 is the big weight drop. These are way lighter than the
3:35
version 4. I had version 4 and a 10. Again I sized down to a 9.5 here. These come in 1.4 ounces lighter
3:43
That's a full 40 grams lighter than version 4. I felt that difference right away on the run. Going
3:50
down a full ounce even more from version 4 just made a huge difference. Felt more agile, felt more
3:57
runnable especially with the zero drop and now with the new Vibram mega grip. Once I get a few
4:02
more test miles in I'll be joining Ernst's full written review which is currently live on the
4:06
Road Trail Run website. If you have any questions about the fit or the sizing please feel free to
