Hi everybody, Sam from Road Trail Run
0:02
coming to you from Park City, Utah,
0:03
where I've been for the last two or
0:05
three weeks running Magnificent
0:08
Trails in Gravel
0:09
and I've been doing it in four trail sup
0:14
2025 2026. I'm going to give you a full
0:19
rundown on all the details. Uh I didn't
0:22
I don't have uh footage of uh from the
0:24
trails because I was uh busy trying to
0:27
run them fast, but there's uh lots of
0:29
details in terms of how they differ, how
0:31
they're similar in this video. And we
0:34
also have a full written uh review. You
0:37
see four shoes, but actually I'm going
0:39
to cover five because I'm also going to
0:41
talk about the Nike ACG Ultrafly 2. I
0:45
only had a four mile uh demo run at UTMB
0:49
in them, but I have enough feeling to be
0:51
able to compare them for you. So, let's
0:54
Who are the contenders here? Uh the Hoka
0:58
Rocket X Trail, the Brooks Cascadia
1:01
Elite, the Adidas Trex Speed Ultra 2,
1:06
and the OnCloud Ultra Pro. So, they're
1:10
all quite similar. Um, and actually the
1:13
uh in terms of weight, uh, the lightest
1:16
shoes are the Hoka at 9 oz, 256 g, and
1:22
the Adidas also at exactly the same
1:25
weight, but they get at that weight very
1:28
differently, and we'll cover that when
1:29
we look at the platforms. Uh, because
1:32
the Hoka is super wide and has ATPU
1:37
foam, similar to what Puma has in their
1:40
race shoes. It's kind of the liveliest
1:42
stuff out there. Very light. Whereas the
1:44
Adidas has a much much narrower
1:47
platform, but uh a deeper rubber. You
1:51
can see how narrow it is at the midfoot.
1:53
Our other two contenders uh uh take a
1:57
bit different approach. About 3/10 4/10
2:00
of an ounce heavier for the Brooks. Very
2:03
wide mid-foot platform and the matrix
2:06
upper. and our uh on moderately wide not
2:12
super wide platform and a leno weave
2:15
upper. So I'm going to go through them
2:17
uh one by one and then afterwards uh
2:20
discuss the uh their comparative
2:22
platforms and fits and give you some
2:26
conclusions. So please stay tuned. So,
2:28
the Rocket X Trail uh by far has the
2:31
widest platform of all the shoes at 100
2:34
heel, 85 mm midfoot, and a giant 125 mm
2:40
forefoot. Uh this is a shoe designed uh
2:44
for up to I would say moderately
2:46
technical trails. Uh it has it's a an
2:50
outsole that's uh Hoka Hoka's uh branded
2:53
own kind of skeletal very sharp lugs.
2:56
Great traction from this outsole. Uh but
2:59
you're sitting up way way high here.
3:02
You're at 45 mm at the heel and uh 39 mm
3:08
at the forefoot for so a 6 mm drop. Uh
3:12
you've got ATPU foam which I think uh
3:15
for its weight and its energy return is
3:18
about the best foam on the market right
3:20
now. It's in uh for example Puma's race
3:23
shoes. Um not shown but there is an
3:26
Hshaped carbon plate. The H part being
3:29
here and two parallel um ro rails if you
3:33
will. So this gives it some uh ability
3:36
to move over terrain despite the high
3:39
stack height. I found them really
3:41
relatively stable. Your foot uh sits
3:44
down some into the foam and the upper is
3:47
very secure of all the shoes. It has the
3:50
most solid heel counter. Really sturdy
3:53
and I would say also the most minimal
3:56
upper. You can see it's a it's a thin
3:59
mesh with lots of underlays uh
4:02
underneath to really keep the weight
4:04
down because we're at only 9 ounces, 256
4:07
grams for a shoe that um towers really
4:10
over the others who were really uh in
4:13
the 38 39. The Nike 37 at the heel. So,
4:17
um this is a shoe uh that was intended,
4:20
I think, for uh courses such as Western
4:23
States. Jim Wamsley um wore it there for
4:27
a good part of the race. Ludo Pomerret
4:30
has worn it at UTMB uh when he moved
4:33
from 50th to fifth place. There's a lot
4:36
of rebound and energy off the front of
4:38
this shoe. Uh you can see the wide wide
4:41
platform. Um the hold is is good. Sizing
4:45
is a little tricky here because this is
4:47
samples a US 9.5. I'm usually an 8.5,
4:50
but with heavy socks, it it works just
4:53
fine for me. So, there's a lot of good
4:55
wrap. Uh you'll see there is no um lower
5:01
kind of gusset. It's a strap that
5:03
attaches. I think it could use a bit
5:05
more tongue uh construction, but this is
5:08
your fast gravel racer of the bunch.
5:11
Let's move on next to the Brooks
5:14
Cascadia Elite. Okay, the Cascadia
5:18
Elite. This is the shoe that took Caleb
5:20
Olsen to second place at the Western
5:23
States. And this one really um surprised
5:26
me in terms of something from uh Brooks,
5:30
not known for their uh ultra racing
5:32
shoes. Catamount's a nice shoe, but this
5:34
one's an allnew shoe. We have a uh Pebba
5:37
foam here. To my way of thinking, it
5:40
feels about the same density with a
5:43
plastic speed vault plate on the inside.
5:47
Um, the platform is the second widest
5:51
here. And we have a we have a platform
5:54
width of 100 at the heel, a big 90 at
5:57
the midfoot, and 115 up front. So, a
6:00
little bit uh narrower um uh 4 foot a
6:04
Hoka. So, here we have a uh Mega Grip
6:09
Elite V-Bram outsole with traction lug.
6:13
Uh this is the second shoe to get Mega
6:15
Grip Elite after the Nord O5 of last
6:18
year. You can see it's a full coverage
6:21
outsole. We have some extra stabilizing
6:23
here where it rises up. We sometimes
6:26
that's on the um on on on both sides. We
6:30
sometimes see that with Vbram. Uh this
6:32
is the most stable shoe by far. Well,
6:35
not by far, but the most stable of the
6:37
bunch. It's also, despite the rapid roll
6:41
forward rocker, it's very flat and
6:43
stable on the ground. Didn't feel quite
6:46
as fast as the other three contenders,
6:49
but much more kind of reliable,
6:52
practical, uh, as you often see with
6:54
Brooks. And it sort of reminds me in
6:57
some ways of the practical, uh, stable
7:00
nature of their Hyperion Elite 5. The
7:03
upper is really special. I think it's it
7:06
it it's my favorite upper of the bunch.
7:09
It's a matrix upper. The uh the threads
7:11
you see here are Kevlar. The fit is true
7:15
to size, a moderately wide toe box,
7:18
really nice crinkle cut laces, and it's
7:21
the only one that has kind of the knit
7:24
uh gator approach, which I like. Um it
7:28
it it works well to keep debris. They're
7:30
easy to put on, easy to lace up. You see
7:33
we have some padding here over the uh
7:35
for the laces. Just a very comfortable
7:38
shoe that for if you're an ultra runner
7:40
will get you through the 100 miles in
7:42
good shape. Um in terms of it its
7:46
weight, very reasonable. Very
7:48
reasonable. A little bit heavier than
7:50
some of the others. 9.7 o6
7:54
grams. we were at uh 256
7:57
gram for the for the um uh the Hoka and
8:01
the Adidas. So, a little bit heavier and
8:03
that's probably largely due to the width
8:06
and also all that mega grip. Um so, this
8:09
is your stable, reliable partner. You
8:12
can see it has a decently rigid, almost
8:14
completely rigid certainly down below a
8:17
heel counter. Your foot sits down in the
8:20
midsole uh sidewalls. In terms of stack
8:23
height, 39.35,
8:26
33.85
8:27
up front. So we're a 6 millimeter drop.
8:30
Um, so a little bit less than the uh
8:33
than the Hoka in terms of stack height,
8:35
but plenty of forgiving cushion here.
8:38
Next up, we're going to talk about the
8:40
On Cloud Ultra. Oh, the Cloud Ultra Pro
8:44
Katy Shide shoe uh surprised me uh as
8:49
did their uh Cloud Boom Strike, not the
8:52
the sprayedon version in being a much
8:54
friendlier shoe than many on uh in terms
8:58
of being somewhat softer and kind of
9:00
more easygoing and even an X-shaped uh
9:04
plastic plate, which I think is better
9:06
than their flap.
9:07
How do they do it? Well, uh, it's a
9:09
little hard to see, but the top foam is
9:12
their Helon HF super critical foam. It's
9:16
relatively soft. It's it's got a lot of
9:18
energy energy. Um, I think it's a pea
9:22
foam, but is similar to the uh to what
9:25
you get with the um the uh the hocafoam,
9:28
but in it's a little bit denser maybe
9:31
feeling. And then you have the I would
9:33
call them vestigial cloud elements. And
9:37
below that, below them, you have a
9:39
firmer layer of Hel Helon HF which
9:44
stabilizes the platform. So you have a
9:46
nice forgiving landing for long
9:48
distances and then a stabilizing element
9:51
below. You have a more kind of minimal
9:54
in terms of coverage outsole, but I
9:55
found the grip really good. Um, so
9:58
depressing. Uh, this is this is I think
10:00
our firmer foam underneath and here is
10:02
our softer foam. Uh what they do with
10:05
the upper is a leno weave which is
10:08
similar to what's in the Nike Kiger.
10:10
Latest Nike Kiger. Very open weave. You
10:14
can see very open. Um and and nonstretch
10:19
uh a bit uh in some ways similar to a
10:22
matrix upper. Um the fit is true to
10:26
size. Moderately wide toe box. I really
10:29
like the tongue and lacing here. the
10:31
crinkle crinkle or the uh the serrated
10:35
edges really work well. It's easy to
10:37
lace up. Again, we got some padding on
10:40
the thin tongue, similar to what we saw
10:42
in the Brooks. And then uh we have a
10:45
gusset, a full gusset,
10:49
which is a very kind of soft uh fabric,
10:52
very good hold, very good stability
10:54
here. Um in in some ways, this is almost
10:58
almost with a trail outsole. a little
11:00
bit different speedboard. The
11:02
construction is very similar to Cloud
11:04
Boom Max, another shoe I like a lot
11:07
because it has a decent very decent
11:09
energy return from its Helon HF. And it
11:12
it's also very stable. The rear collar
11:15
construction is more conventional. I
11:18
haven't gotten any grit in there in M,
11:22
you know, not super dusty. It hasn't
11:23
been super dusty here in Park City, but
11:26
it's a more conventional collar. Um,
11:29
they add some foam to the front here to
11:31
create a raised toe bumper. Um, it's
11:35
very smooth running on all surfaces. Uh,
11:38
not as agile as the Adidas if you're
11:42
looking for agility and kind of
11:43
technical terrain, but gets closer. It's
11:46
more I think it's more agile than the
11:48
Brooks and the Hoka which are kind of
11:50
more a little more uh
11:53
smoother trail focused particularly the
11:56
Hoka with the Brooks being kind of the
11:59
stable kind of uh wellplanted one of the
12:03
bunch. So now let's take a look at the
12:06
Adidas uh Speed Ultra 2. The Trax Speed
12:10
Ultra 2.
12:12
Okay, the Speed Ultra 2 comes in at 9
12:15
oz, 256 gram, uh, which is this the same
12:19
weight as our um as our super broad
12:22
Hoka. Um, and this this is kind of the
12:26
more technical trails, 4 foot to midfoot
12:29
striking because of the platform. You
12:31
can see uh that it has a wide uh front
12:35
platform at uh 115 which is the same I
12:39
think as the uh Brooks and the um on uh
12:44
but you can see it's further back. The
12:48
wide area is further back. So if you
12:50
compare
12:51
you can see that the width is
12:55
concentrated
12:56
uh a little bit further back. Um, and
12:59
then it kind of points a bit more to the
13:01
front. Then we have a super super narrow
13:05
um, midfoot at 50 millimeters.
13:09
You might recall the Brooks was 90.
13:12
Uh, and so this is very narrow through
13:15
here. Uh, and then we have a uh, 80
13:19
millimeter heel. Reasonably wide, but
13:21
not again not super wide. So while the
13:24
stack height is uh very similar to the
13:28
others at uh let me find it here 3830
13:33
um we have an 8 mm drop so we have a bit
13:36
less in the front um and because of the
13:39
wide the very narrow rear platform you
13:42
want to be forward feels quite firm at
13:44
the rear even though we have really nice
13:48
I think might be the softest light uh
13:51
foam of any of the shoes. It's not super
13:54
soft, but it's it's light strike pro. I
13:57
think I don't have a lot of details yet.
13:59
I don't have the spec sheet, but um but
14:01
um stack height uh seems to be
14:04
unchanged, but the foam is definitely
14:06
changed and the energy rods are much
14:09
more I would say much more mellow. I
14:12
actually took along with the foam, I
14:14
took uh this shoe AB with version one
14:18
and the difference was noticeable. still
14:20
the aggressive one in the bunch. Still
14:23
the kind of speedster. Uh but it's
14:26
definitely uh more flexible. And I'll
14:28
try to show you that there's some flex
14:30
here whereas the other one had none. And
14:33
back to the on cuz I didn't show you
14:35
that one. The flex of the on
14:38
similar similar but uh a little bit
14:41
stiffer actually maybe than the Adidas.
14:44
So, this makes this a more practical um
14:47
ultra and trail shoe than the first one,
14:49
which I think was pretty much all kind
14:52
of elite, very elite focused if you were
14:54
going to go long long distances.
14:56
Although for short distances, super fun.
14:59
The upper is somewhat changed. The hold
15:02
is much much better than before. It's
15:04
less, you can a little hard to see, but
15:06
there's more padding. Lace up is really
15:08
really easy and um and secure. This is
15:12
probably the lowest volume upper of the
15:15
group. Um, so again, it meets its kind
15:18
of performance orientation. It also has,
15:22
I would say, the uh the most aggressive
15:25
uh traction. There's some of these lugs
15:28
I think up to 5 millimeters.
15:30
And then these are three and then we
15:32
have four uh four along the edges. So,
15:36
this is an aggressive traction here um
15:40
of the bunch and it's almost full
15:42
coverage. Uh so, while it's the narrower
15:45
platform and it is 9 oz, same as that
15:48
super broad hoka, that additional rubber
15:51
adds weight. Rubber is the heaviest
15:52
material in a shoe. So, we got one more
15:55
to cover here, which is the Nike
15:59
uh ACG uh Ultrafly 2. So, the ACG
16:03
Ultrafly 2 has a 37 mm heel, 28.5 mm for
16:08
4 foot, 8 1/2 mm drop. So, it's the
16:11
lowest stack, highest drop of the shoes.
16:13
The weight is 9.6 oz, 272 g in US9. Um,
16:19
and it has a 3 to 4 mm uh mega grip uh
16:24
outsole. I was not able to measure it.
16:27
It definitely felt like the most agile
16:30
of the shoes. Even though my run was
16:33
very brief, only uh four miles, um the
16:37
fly plate, carbon plate here is split
16:40
down the middle. This is a very
16:42
different shoe than the Ultrafly 1,
16:44
which was very stiff with a sloppy
16:46
upper. Um it it was the winning shoe at
16:49
Western States, so it can certainly do
16:52
the smooth stuff, and I think it'll be
16:54
also a contender uh on the more
16:56
technical trails.
16:59
So, let's talk about the platform widths
17:02
and the outsoles. Really, the platform
17:04
widths here uh dictate, I think, the
17:07
best uses uh of the uh of each of the
17:10
shoes. It's interesting to note that the
17:13
Hoka Rocket X uh trail and the widest
17:17
platform and the uh Speed um Speed Ultra
17:22
2 are actually the same 9 ounce 256 g
17:28
weight. So, the narrowest and the widest
17:30
and and a lot of that comes from the use
17:33
of uh ATPU foam in the Hoka um and the
17:38
skeletal outsole. Whereas the Adidas
17:41
goes with a very full coverage deeper uh
17:46
four to five 3 to 5 millimeter lugs. Uh
17:49
over on the Hoka uh we have uh just uh 3
17:53
mm lugs in that skeletal coverage. And
17:56
then we have shoes. I guess you could
17:58
say in the middle. But in terms of the
18:01
platform widths, the 9 oz uh Hoka is 100
18:05
mm at the heel, 85 at the midfoot, 125
18:11
forefoot. The Brooks Cascadia uh Elite
18:15
is 100 mm at the heel, uh 90 at the
18:19
midfoot, so quite wide at the midfoot,
18:23
and uh 115 up front.
18:27
Now the uh the on cloud ultra pro is 90
18:33
mm at the heel uh 70 at the midfoot. So
18:37
quite narrow there which translates to
18:40
better agility I think whereas the uh
18:42
Brooks and the uh in particular is very
18:46
very stable on the ground. You can see
18:48
its outsole is a bit more skeletal, but
18:51
that the whitish areas are all rubber.
18:54
And over uh so our um our Cloud Ultra
18:57
Pro 9070 110. And then the very spelt
19:02
Adidas, which clearly favors a mid-foot
19:06
strike. The widest point uh on the
19:09
Adidas is uh at 115 at the forefoot.
19:13
Then we go way way down to 50
19:15
millimeters midfoot. by far the
19:17
narrowest and then uh an 80 mm heel also
19:21
quite narrow. In terms of the outsole
19:24
rubbers, a skeletal kind of approach
19:28
here to save weight. Uh I found this
19:31
outsole incredibly grippy if not deep.
19:34
Uh the Brooks goes with all I would say
19:38
full coverage which increases its
19:41
stability of the new Mega Grip Elite.
19:44
They're the second shoe to have it after
19:45
the Nord O5. And you can see the the
19:49
lugs there are um 3 mm but with the
19:53
traction lug and there's some cutouts. U
19:57
the Brooks is the next to stiffest shoe
20:00
after the carbon plated Hoka.
20:02
Now the on goes with their mission grip
20:05
rubber uh with 3 to 4 mm depth lugs in
20:11
quite a dispersed pattern. runs very
20:14
smoothly as a result on um on firmer
20:17
surfaces whereas the the uh uh the
20:22
Brooks is very very noisy but also
20:24
smooth, very stable. The Adidas goes uh
20:28
with famous Continental rubber and the
20:31
depth there is 3 to 5 mm uh in a
20:38
aggressive pattern. Uh the grip is
20:40
really good here. almost too good on
20:42
some gravel. It really really bites. I
20:45
would say it has the best kind of
20:47
overall grip of all the shoes and of
20:51
course favors that midfoot strike. So
20:54
the width of the platform uh dictates in
20:58
a lot of ways how the shoes uh their
21:01
best uses. Uh and of course the outsole.
21:04
So we've got kind of a uh definitely a
21:07
gravel focused outsole here. kind of a
21:10
western state shoe. Uh the uh the Brooks
21:14
has kind of an allaround uh uh shoe u
21:19
pattern for multi-purpose. The on
21:22
similar if a bit more dispersed. It's
21:25
smoother on uh road and so on, but the
21:28
grip is still very good. Whereas the
21:30
Adidas is all about speed and lots of uh
21:34
grip, but with a very narrow platform.
21:37
So let's also talk about heel hold and
21:40
heel construction. Um essentially we
21:44
have uh two uh two shoes with kind of a
21:47
conventional rolled collar construction.
21:50
The the Hoka and the uh the on both have
21:56
very very solid uh hold, very
21:58
comfortable. Whereas our um our Brooks
22:02
goes with the knit uh collar
22:05
and knit tongue debris proof. Also uh
22:09
very effect it's very effective. Uh the
22:11
Adidas and we some of us remember it's
22:14
the shakier hold of the um of the first
22:17
speed ultra goes with more padding. Uh
22:21
not much of a heel counter here whereas
22:24
the uh on has a semi- rigid. the Brooks
22:28
yet more rigid and the Hoka the most
22:30
rigid of all even though it's uh the
22:33
lightest. So the the Hoka really focuses
22:35
on the heel hold with this wide platform
22:39
and mo I would say most minimal upper
22:41
and is effective. Uh the Brooks
22:45
um I really like this knit tongue works
22:48
really well. Uh they all have crinkle or
22:52
saw to laces. Uh when we move over to
22:55
the on I think this is the best tongue
22:57
arrangement. There's some light padding.
22:59
The laces are really easy to use. You
23:01
can see that padding in the laces. Uh
23:04
the Adidas has the most precise fit.
23:06
It's comfortable, but it's lower volume
23:09
compared uh certainly to the uh the big
23:12
the two big ones over here. and uh even
23:16
uh the on which as you can see is
23:18
somewhat more rounded um and uh roomier
23:23
toe box. Terms of toe bumpers very firm
23:26
on the well I wouldn't say very firm but
23:28
very substantial on the on with a rising
23:31
piece of foam also to protect you. The
23:35
Adidas uh is more kind of uh
23:39
conventional very effective as well. Um
23:43
the brooks
23:45
uh stiff on the front but relatively
23:49
soft on the sides a lot. You can see
23:51
there's extra overlays to better protect
23:53
the upper. And there you can see the
23:55
Kevlar fibers in the matrix upper.
23:58
Really fine upper there. And the Hoka
24:01
much more minimal I would say or
24:04
somewhat more minimal in the toe bump in
24:06
the toe bumper area. um uh with a bit
24:10
more on the medial side than on the
24:13
lateral side, but still perfectly
24:15
adequate. And remember, you're at 45 39
24:18
stack height, so you're way off the
24:19
ground. You're not going to stub your
24:20
toe. I think the tongue here could use a
24:24
bit more substance. Uh, and the laces,
24:27
while they're crinkle cut, aren't quite
24:30
as kind of grippy through the holes as
24:33
uh either the Brooks or for that matter,
24:36
of course, the On uh or the Adidas. So,
24:40
this is really a more kind of comfort
24:42
heat focused approach, whereas the
24:45
Adidas is kind of allin super fast. Uh,
24:50
I would say given the geometry, this is
24:53
a tougher shoe to run even though it's
24:55
very fast. The the um the on is kind of
25:00
in the middle. I really like its ride.
25:03
Um, they're all quite
25:06
uh have some flex. Um, I would say the
25:09
carbon plated Hoka is the stiffest. Um,
25:15
uh, the Brooks is next because in part
25:17
because of all that outsole coverage.
25:20
Um, uh, even though we have carbon here,
25:23
we have the speed vault carbon infused.
25:28
Over in the on, we have an Xshaped,
25:31
uh, plate. And in the Adidas, we have
25:35
the energy rods. Um, and I will say, uh,
25:39
said it earlier, the, um, the Speed Al
25:42
Speed Ultra 2 here has, I think, a
25:45
softer light strike pro. It's more
25:48
flexible. It is definitely easier run to
25:51
run than the first version, which I
25:52
found really difficult to handle.
25:57
So, they're all designed slightly
26:00
differently for different purposes, kind
26:02
of maybe different athletes.
26:05
Um, the speed shoe,
26:08
uh, 4foot striking, the very narrow
26:11
platform in the Adidas speed ultra, the
26:14
allarounder in the on with a soft top
26:18
layer, firm bottom layer, uh, kind of a
26:20
reasonable compromise. Uh, the Brooks is
26:23
the stable one. Didn't feel as kind of
26:26
as snappy as fast as the other cuz it's
26:28
it's stiffer, I think, because of its
26:31
outsole, but it's the long long haul
26:34
one. It's probably the one I would
26:36
recommend for uh 100 mileer, but for the
26:40
midpack, although certainly Brooks
26:42
Elites have done well in it, second in
26:44
Western States. And the Hoka is the fast
26:49
uh gravel kind of shoe, but uh Wamsley
26:53
has worn it second half of um western
26:56
states. It's it's a really really
26:59
energetic off the front kind of ride.
27:03
uh the probably the most energetic kind
27:05
of bouncy and and and kind of fun with
27:09
um for me anyway the oncoming second uh
27:13
in terms of kind of liveless although
27:16
it's it's a bit more sober bit more
27:18
conservative a Swiss of course and the
27:21
Adidas is the kind of exciting fast one
27:25
if you can handle it
27:26
in our written review which is linked
27:28
here I also have some uh commentary and
27:31
comparisons to the Nike ACG Ultrafly 2,
27:35
which I was able to demo for three or
27:37
four miles in Shamoni at UTMB. It is
27:40
also definitely a 2026 contender. Thank
27:43
you very much for watching. Have a great
27:45
run.
