In the video, we're going to take a look
0:01
at the Mount Coast H1. $160 available
0:05
now. It's a door to trail or gravel type
0:08
shoe and it's a really good one. I have
0:11
about 80 uh kilometers, 50 miles on my
0:13
pair today. I took them up for a final
0:15
run up in Round Valley Park City and
0:18
share my impressions and then we'll do
0:20
comparisons and some conclusions. Stay
0:22
tuned. Okay, let's take a look at the
0:24
Mount Coast H1. First, you'll notice
0:27
they're pretty dusty and dirty. I've
0:29
gotten 80 kilometers, about 50 miles in
0:32
the shoe. Uh, and I've done just about
0:35
everything in it. Of course, I've run
0:37
trails. I've tked with a 20 lb pack.
0:40
I've gone hiking on uh quite technical
0:42
trails. This is a very versatile and
0:45
very light shoe. Um, we have a stack
0:48
height of 35 mm at the heel, 29 at the
0:52
forefoot, and we weigh, and this is a US
0:56
8 to 8 1/2, we weigh 8.2 2 232 gram. So,
1:01
this is a very light shoe. Really not uh
1:04
it's actually the same weight as say a
1:06
Pegasus Plus uh road shoe. Yet, we have
1:10
a trail outsole. Not a super super deep
1:13
one. 2 mm lugs. Uh here, uh they've
1:17
proven very sticky on all, but very
1:19
smooth wet rock. Um, this is what uh
1:23
nowadays is called a gravel shoe or a I
1:27
guess doortotrail shoe. But this special
1:30
rubber, I'm going to uh talk about it a
1:32
bit uh later, really gives it a smooth
1:36
smooth ride. It's a relatively soft
1:39
rubber, but it's actually a cast
1:41
polyurethane.
1:43
And you can see I have nowhere to speak
1:46
of in 50 miles almost all on either
1:50
rocky terrain or pavement. Really
1:52
remarkable. There is also in the midsole
1:56
a single stack. It's called circle cell.
2:00
And actually this amazing shoe has a
2:03
strong sustainability story as the
2:06
circle cell foam is actually made from
2:11
biomass and organic waste 20 pounds or 9
2:16
kilos per midsole. Um and Mount Coast
2:19
says it it it's as reactive or more
2:22
reactive than pea. They don't say what
2:24
it is exactly but it sure feels like a
2:27
pebba an organic pebba. um the feel and
2:30
then I'm going to give you some
2:31
commentary from the run here in Park
2:34
City. Just took them out this morning.
2:36
Uh so it'll be uh this is after. But um
2:40
this is a very very fast, smooth shoe on
2:44
all terrain. It's a superb road shoe,
2:47
too. And you can see, and I'll see if I
2:50
can get down low enough that it has
2:52
quite a rocker up front. Uh quite a
2:56
rocker. So, that really helps you roll
2:58
forward. Um, in terms of flexibility,
3:02
you can see there's some flex, but
3:05
there's a nice stable 4ft uh platform.
3:08
Um, it's a relatively wide uh platform,
3:12
90 mm at the heel, 85 uh midfoot, and I
3:17
think it's 115 up front. Um, the upper,
3:20
oh, it is special. Uh as as we uh as
3:25
many of you know, Mount Coast started as
3:28
a company focused on ultra road running.
3:31
The uh I guess it was called the H1, the
3:33
S1, very stable kind of shoes. I didn't
3:37
particularly like them. Uh but they've
3:39
always had really nice uppers and they
3:42
use what's called tune fit. So this the
3:46
first three eyelets are held by a pull
3:50
cord and then you lace. Now, what I like
3:52
is I can just uh leave this as is and
3:56
slip them on and tie them up. Um the
3:59
tongue is moderately padded with a
4:02
gusset. Uh the heel area is well padded
4:05
as well, and we've got a very solid heel
4:09
counter. Um, what I think makes this
4:11
shoe work on on um on trail is uh that
4:16
we have a a combination of kind of a
4:20
leatherrett, very wide but flexible
4:25
eye for holding the laces and then the
4:28
mesh is very soft, nonstretch. You can
4:31
see it's very it's thin. It's very
4:33
debris proof and it may have a few
4:36
Kevlar fibers
4:38
uh in it. Uh not sure about that, but
4:42
the the grayer maybe. There's a a decent
4:44
toe bumper. Um I think this upper works
4:48
better for me than their T1, which is
4:50
kind of baggy. This one holds the foot
4:52
really well. And I'll show you in the
4:54
video, you know, how it kind of um how
4:57
it kind of fits. This is an allarounder.
5:00
Um, it's one of my favorite shoes of the
5:02
year. Um, and it is very versatile. Now,
5:06
here's some commentary from the run.
5:10
Okay, we're in Round Valley
5:12
with our Mount the Coast H1 on the
5:17
single tracks.
5:19
A little bit sandy here. 2 mm lugs are
5:22
doing fine. Could be a bit deeper for
5:25
this, but on gravel, they're fantastic.
5:27
It's a beautiful day.
5:30
up here. We're at about 6,800 ft, 2100
5:35
meters. So, our H1 is
5:41
very reactive and quick off the ground.
5:48
I've run these on road. I've trek with
5:51
them. They can do just about anything.
5:56
Given the lugs, they're not a heavy duty
6:00
trailing just fine. Going to keep going.
6:04
Look at the beautiful scenery here in
6:07
Park City.
6:09
So, we're really, really light here at
6:11
8.2 oz, 232 g, and US8.5. And that is
6:17
sure felt with the quick turnover here.
6:20
And the tune fit lacing system.
6:24
Brilliant. I've adjusted it the way it
6:26
is there. All I have to do is slip in
6:30
every time. I don't have to ever adjust
6:31
it. It also is kind of good that you
6:34
don't have to play around with the front
6:36
laces. Uh heel hold is really good. I'm
6:41
going to keep going.
6:43
In terms of the fit, true true to size
6:46
here. This is a US um 88,
6:50
but they've actually marked U41. So,
6:53
this was an early sample I got at uh
6:55
UTMBB.
6:59
Okay. At the top of the ridge here,
7:00
we're looking uh more or less towards
7:04
the Canyon Ski Resort over there. And
7:06
look, a little bit of snow. We had some
7:08
snow, but a bit of it melted. So, uh and
7:11
then this way, we're looking down into
7:14
Round Valley where I'm going to go. So,
7:16
I just came 126 foot uh climb and oh my,
7:19
I set a Straa Segment PR and I'd done it
7:22
a bunch of times. The grip was good.
7:25
Actually, it was much better uh on that
7:29
firm,
7:31
hard dirt than it was when there was
7:33
kind of a sheen of dust over it before.
7:37
That was a bit slippery with the 2mm
7:39
lugs. Uh in deeper gravel, uh such as
7:43
we're going to go on over here.
7:45
absolutely no grip problems. And this is
7:48
a very lively, quick feeling shoe. Uh
7:52
that front rocker really propels you
7:56
forward and up really really nicely. The
7:59
hold is excellent. You know, it's not
8:01
full fullblown
8:03
trail shoe because of the lugs, but for
8:06
this kind of running, given the light
8:08
weight, 8.2 2 oz. 232 g. Very
8:13
reasonable.
8:14
3529
8:15
stack height. You've got a light, agile,
8:17
quick feeling shoe. Clearly one of my
8:21
favorites of the year. So for road and
8:25
trail because it's really not much
8:27
heavier than say a Rebel from New
8:29
Balance or even the Nike Pegasus Plus
8:32
which also has good traction. Uh, and
8:35
the foam, this um, circle cell foam is
8:38
really reactive. It's not a soft and
8:41
bouncy kind of foam. It's a quick
8:44
reacting. It has enough stability to it
8:47
for trail and for tempo on the road. It
8:51
just really kind of responds as opposed
8:54
to bounces. Well, I'm going to keep
8:56
going. First obvious comparison is the
8:59
Mount Co T1, which is 36 32. So, a
9:02
little higher stack height and a weight
9:04
of 9 oz, 255 gram. The biggest
9:08
difference is in the outsole as the T1
9:11
has a V-B mega grip with traction lug.
9:14
Um, it has a somewhat softer pebba based
9:17
foam that's a bit bouncier and it
9:20
although I found its upper not nearly as
9:23
smooth fitting with its ride clearly
9:26
more trail focused, it's also a very
9:28
fine shoe. Also in the gravel category,
9:31
the Nordite Ultra Pro, um, which has a
9:36
40 millimeter heel to our 35 millimeter.
9:39
Uh, the foam is a combination of EVA and
9:42
25% PEA. Feels quite similar to our um,
9:46
Mount Coast. Um, however, this is a
9:49
considerably heavier shoe. 9.4 ounces
9:52
versus 8.2.
9:55
Um, but it does have a higher 40 35
9:59
stack height to our 35 uh 29. And it
10:03
also the weight is also explained by a
10:06
somewhat uh deeper uh lug pattern. I
10:09
think it's three or 3 1/2 here. Uh this
10:13
is kind of a longer distance gravel
10:15
shoe. Um it's not as stable on um on
10:20
more technical terrain than the uh Mount
10:23
Coast. Uh, but it has a little bit
10:25
better uh, grip. Um, I didn't find it
10:29
quite as dynamic upper. Very secure,
10:32
very nice. It's not the sort of smooth
10:34
soft comfort hold that you have here.
10:37
It's more kind of trail focused.
10:40
Actually, look at that stout um, heel
10:43
um, uh, toe bumper area and heel
10:46
counter. a really nice shoe that
10:48
probably is a better distance shoe on
10:50
gravel or very easy trails in the mount
10:53
to coast if you're really going ultra
10:56
and not exactly in the same category but
10:59
exactly the same stack height pretty
11:01
much 3529 the Solomon Slab uh Pulsar 4
11:07
um it has a combination of a super
11:10
critical pea up front and Solomon's EVA
11:14
blend um this is a shoe clearly ally
11:17
designed for more technical trails. Uh
11:20
it's a firmer ride. It's somewhat more
11:23
stable. It's not as much fun when things
11:25
get kind of firm and smooth. Um again, a
11:28
beautiful upper. Uh very secure yet a
11:32
bit more secure than our Mount Coast.
11:35
But here we're at 160 and the Slab
11:38
Pulsar is 220. So a really quite a bit
11:42
more expensive shoe. This is the shoe
11:44
you want if your shorter distance races
11:48
are more technical. And this is the shoe
11:51
that you want if you want to go
11:54
versatile, you you your trails are
11:56
smoother, you want to take them on the
11:58
road, you may want to take uh one shoe
12:00
for a long trip. So, in conclusion,
12:04
after our comparisons, the Mount Coast
12:07
H1 for me is their best shoe yet. It's
12:11
one of the most versatile shoes of the
12:13
year for me. I've run road, I've run
12:15
trail, I've hiked with it with a pack.
12:18
Uh, it is super light at that 8.2
12:20
ounces, 232 g. It's got plenty of
12:23
cushion cushioning. It's very reactive.
12:26
Uh, so far the durability of this CPU
12:30
cast polyurethane
12:32
outsole is simply outstanding. We've got
12:34
80 kilometers, no wear. Uh, it plays
12:38
very well in the sense that it's
12:40
actually even though we got that
12:41
incredible wear on tough surfaces. It's
12:44
a relatively soft kind of rubber um that
12:48
plays very well with our midsole which
12:51
is relatively firm. We've got a great
12:53
upper. Oh my goodness. Comfortable upper
12:56
um that uh if you will kind of can do
13:00
road or trail in in great comfort. A
13:02
super uh true to size fit. Uh really an
13:07
outstanding shoe. It's definitely their
13:09
best yet and for me one of the best
13:11
shoes of 2025.
13:14
Thank you very much for watching. You
13:16
you'll also see here linked a um uh to
13:20
our full multitester written review.
13:22
Pretty much not all of our testers, but
13:25
all of us really thought this was a
13:26
spectacular shoe from Mount Coast. Have
13:29
a great runs.
