In the video we're going to take a look at the November 2nd releasing Cloud
0:04
Eclipse. It weighs 9.7 ounces 275 grams US 9 and has a big max 37 millimeter
0:12
heel 31 millimeter forefoot and of course a beautiful on upper. It introduces
0:18
or for the second shoe the On's Cloud Tech phase angled elements that really
0:24
move you forward. It's a wonderful big shoe ride. We'll also take it on an AB
0:29
run and compare it to the On Cloud Monster also a max cushion shoe from On
0:33
but not nearly the same ride and a comfort. Hi everyone Sam from Road Trail
0:39
Run. Today we're going to take a close look at the On Cloud Eclipse. It's a
0:44
brand new shoe launching November 2nd and it represents a really really fine
0:50
implementation of On's Cloud Tech elements but in a new approach which we
0:55
first saw in the very flexible kind of thin feeling Cloud Surfer this year but
1:03
here we have a rigid rocker profile shoe with the Cloud Tech phase elements. You
1:10
can see they're angled in the direction of travel really effective during my
1:14
first run and we have a somewhat softer Helion foam. So this is a rigid rocker
1:21
profile shoe and I guess I got to tell you I was a bit worried that it might
1:26
not flow well but it does it really flows magnificently. Further what On has
1:34
done is they've changed as you can see the outsole you remember and here's
1:40
probably the last implementation of it in the Cloud Monster the pods the podular
1:47
kind of outsole here we have a fuller contact with the ground and you'll
1:52
notice the famous speed board it's now a midfoot shank that extends I think all
1:57
the way to the rear whereas before it was full length in most of the On's and
2:02
it led to kind of a firm harsh ride. I never much enjoyed On rides but I always
2:09
loved their style maybe Roger Federer now involved said hey we got to have
2:14
some some more friendly running shoes. In the Cloud Surfer we had no speed board
2:21
we had the Cloud Tech phase pods and I found the Cloud Surfer a lot of fun but
2:28
not really a very good distance shoe and I'll show you why here. As you can see on
2:34
four foot compression they go all the way down so yes while it was bouncy it
2:41
got thin and tiring whereas here with our rigid rocker and more stack height
2:47
we have 37 millimeters at the heel 31 millimeters at the forefoot according to
2:53
On I actually measure I think a bit more at about 40 millimeters but we have a
2:59
much bigger stack height actually two millimeters more than the Monster which
3:04
had a flexible profile and that firmer Helion foam. Well I'm gonna give you
3:13
impressions from the run and I'm gonna compare them A B to our to our Monster
3:19
but this is clearly a more effective max cushion shoe. I do not miss the
3:25
flexibility at all that the Monster had it was a fine shoe because our elements
3:31
really roll us forward through the stride while staying very stable with
3:38
our midfoot shank as you can see the speed board moves from the center of the
3:44
shoe you can see it was way up there and was full length now it extends from here
3:51
to the rear. I do have a bit of I guess a small negative in that I I don't think
3:59
it definitely is in the back here I don't think it should be on the lateral
4:03
side because what On can do is tune the shapes of each of the elements and here
4:10
on the lateral side they have a wider it's about 10 millimeters longer than on
4:16
the medial side and I'll show you that you can see the medial side is shorter
4:22
so they could have achieved the same kind of heel stability I think with with
4:27
a shorter less pronounced a rear pod rear cloud tech element and because it's
4:36
a bit rigid here but that's a minor minor con you can also see that it's
4:41
more filled in we're not going to have the rock issues and there's much more
4:46
contact from the outsole to the ground in terms of the upper and I'll get into
4:51
the a B comparison with the cloud monster you'll see that video a little
4:57
later that segment we definitely have a broader toe box with softer more pliable
5:07
foam pliable mesh than in the cloud monster in fact it's very similar in
5:13
upper design to the surfer which had whose mesh is kind of quite a bit
5:20
thicker not quite as pliable but the same kind of lacing system so let's get
5:25
into that but before we leave the front of the shoe you can see how pliable soft
5:31
it is but we do have a nice vertical toe bumper they fit me perfectly to true to
5:38
the size I have a narrower to medium foot and they're they're quite roomy but
5:44
very well held I think very very low volume feet may struggle a bit but wider
5:49
feet I think we'll be happy because what we have here is to hold us here in
5:55
this area we have these reflective laminates tied into the lacing system so
6:02
that holds you here and then we have a knit tongue but it isn't super super
6:10
stretchy and you can see it has pads on the sides here and those pads help
6:16
cushion you from this quite substantial strip here which holds the rest of the
6:21
laces we have an additional lace if you will a lace eyelet because as you can
6:30
see here we came down to here whereas here we wrap around the foot the the
6:37
collar hold is really good it's not quite as secure as the more substantial
6:44
collar hold here as you can see it's a bit more pliable although we do have a
6:50
very stout clip around the rear kind of textured beautiful beautifully look
6:55
looking and you can see how it's quite rigid at the bottom but quite pliable at
7:02
the top this might be a bit overdone too but I'm not complaining so in terms of
7:08
overall pros and cons and I'll get to the from the run impressions a very fun
7:15
lively ride you will be surprised that this rigid shoe moves along so well in
7:22
terms of comparable kinds of shoes in the max category we've got the the Puma
7:29
magnify nitro 2 which is a flexible profile about the same cushion but a
7:35
higher drop this is 8mm drop versus 10mm there we have the
7:41
Vomero from Nike dual layers of different foams Zumex and Cushlon again
7:47
a flexible kind of profile shoe and then you got to get into some of the
7:51
plated shoes and here there's no plate at the front although we do have the
7:56
midfoot shank kind of reminds me of the adidas torsion in some ways and just as
8:02
effective because it stabilizes then we get into things like the more of you for
8:07
from New Balance very mushy soft I found kind of hard to turn over endorphin
8:13
shift a really fine one but again the magic here is in these cloud tech phased
8:21
elements which despite the rigid profile provide you a really nice roll of course
8:27
we also have quite a bit of a rocker as you can see at the front and the back
8:31
that's also helping quite a bit so what's it for well on says it's for
8:38
daily training runs and long runs and I'm gonna agree I'm gonna give you more
8:44
impressions as I run as well as that comparison to the to the cloud monster
8:51
a be but it's 9.7 ounces for that big stack quite reasonable it's sub 10
8:58
ounces so it's 275 grams in a US 9 it's a hundred and eighty dollars it launches
9:05
November 2nd today the day of the video in terms of the ride what you really
9:12
notice here is the front rocker and the compression of our cloud tech elements
9:18
really drives you forward despite the 31 millimeter front stack height also it's
9:27
very very well cushioned the cushioning feel it's not a soft foam but the
9:32
elements compress so there's a lot of reactivity back a lot of vibration
9:38
control and cushion but not mushy which is important when you get this high
9:44
stack as far as the heel area yesterday I was running slower and I felt some
9:54
kind of rigid feel on the lateral side maybe not enough decoupling but as the
10:02
pace picks up I think the rear rocker kicks in and I've been running about 908
10:10
pace here and things get a lot lot smoother very smooth flow forward the
10:19
shank I showed you earlier does stabilize but at the ground so this is
10:26
it a stability kind of shoe or shank so it helps also give a bit of a kick
10:33
forward so all in all a spectacular max cushion ride some ways I first one I
10:42
thought of was the tempo next from Nike which is a bit more explosive bit less
10:49
forgiving to slower paces but there's some of the same kind of front impulse
10:55
of a kind of softer more deliberate variety here gonna keep going
11:05
the mouth of the harbor those are the Isles of Shoals much history fishing
11:09
history very first Europeans around here landed there in the summer so let's talk
11:23
about fit okay so I am true to size here and this is a generous soft on the foot
11:34
fit my right foot as you often hear narrower than lower volume than my left
11:41
just turns out that way and while on my left foot I am very secure just about
11:48
perfect I'm a bit loose in through here I think also the wide platform under the
11:56
at the sock liner may be affecting that but it's not a big issue I do have
12:01
relatively thick socks I think the fit true to size plenty of toe box room for
12:08
just about anybody and then we can move if you will out using the lacing
12:13
arrangement and and I think wider feet will be happy narrow feet will be just
12:20
fine as it's a very light on the foot comfortable upper with plenty of room
12:26
and just spectacular kind of comfort just wish it was a teeny more dialed in
12:32
maybe more padding around the collars even though they're comfortable to stiffen about where the last lace goes through might do it maybe a bit more
12:42
tongue but the tongue is comfortable these kind of thin laces very nice maybe
12:48
a bit thicker maybe a bit stiffer might help that bring bring my foot in but all
12:53
in all a really really fine fit fairly similar to the cloud surfer but with a
12:58
lighter mesh so the cloud server may be a bit more supportive so now I'm gonna
13:05
keep going I'll give you something along here one a gets cold out here in the
13:11
winter I'd also tell you Tracksmith films a lot of their catalogs right in
13:17
this area especially the cold weather stuff or the cold weather stuff so now
13:23
we're gonna take up go up a little hill but basically I'm gonna say it again
13:30
we've got a really smooth smooth flow forward for a max cushion shoe without a
13:38
plate it's actually very dynamic I think tribute to the fuller coverage outsole
13:48
and the foam which isn't too too soft and of course those pods compressing in
13:57
line I can really feel that particularly up front I mentioned earlier on the
14:04
cloud surfer we they compressed way too far lower stack not as much front rubber
14:12
and just kind of bottomed out here not the case they compress and roll you
14:19
forward okay let's sum things up after my second run in the low 920s in the on
14:28
cloud eclipse so what I noticed is yesterday I ran slower and I had some
14:34
firmness here of the the plate which I think extends all the way back you can
14:40
see how firm it is there but today as I picked up the pace I really got forward
14:45
on the rocker and everything was great this is one wonderful max cushion ride
14:50
it is not a soft mushy one the geometry and the foam and of course our cloud
14:59
tech phase elements keep you moving forward no matter the pace and then you
15:05
especially feel the front compression and toe off and what happens is you you
15:11
kind of get supported and then pushed off the plate the plate ends right about
15:17
right about there the plastic plate here and then you go forward down as the they
15:23
compress but not all the way down like in the cloud surfer and off you go so
15:30
there's just a very smooth continuous flow pretty much no matter the pace
15:35
except for that little bit of firmness or sharpness of the plate now there's
15:40
plenty of cushion the cushion is reactive in the sense that it's not
15:47
super super soft moderate moderately firm but again with the cloud tech
15:53
elements that takes a lot of the shock away and it also provides quite a bit of
15:58
I would call it bounce but it's not bounce really from the foam it's bounce
16:03
from the elements releasing back up so it's very kind of steady vertical and
16:09
horizontal as you move forward so there's just a very consistent flow
16:13
other relatively stable because of the plate with our 37 millimeter heel 31
16:20
forefoot in terms of the upper this is my narrower foot and I could use a bit
16:29
more hold through here maybe I'll try the back lace hole but they're not quite
16:34
as well held on my narrower foot as my wider foot so but that's a good sign if
16:39
you tend to have a wider foot again the style the craftsmanship just simply
16:46
amazing here look even this heel clip is textured it's not the usual smooth
16:52
thing these reflective overlay straps which hold the laces just beautiful very
16:59
classy and I'll also highlight the tongue has stayed perfectly in place
17:04
it's a stretch a little bit stretch knit tongue and you can see there's one and
17:11
two holders if you will through this front kind of branding strap so there's
17:17
no motion side to side no lace bite even on this foot where I had to cinch him a
17:23
bit tighter my narrower foot toe box room excellent excellent the high toe
17:28
bumper keeps everything together along with the straps and look how soft that
17:33
is all in all on says about this shoe the cloud eclipse that it is a daily
17:41
training to long run shoe and I totally agree with that a great long run shoe
17:46
for just about any pace runner and if you and even you're very fast folks and
17:51
if you are a person who wants a daily training ride with a lot of cushion but
17:57
no motion this is the one to take a close look at because it'll it I've
18:02
never I so far I just haven't been bogged down at any pace in this shoe
18:06
just a really fun fun excellent and very innovative new approach to cushioning and
18:14
ride geometry with the cloud tech face really really effective here and much
18:20
more so than in the cloud surfer so we also have a full multi tester written
18:24
review on road trail run comm so please check that out there's a whole bunch of
18:30
comparisons in there this video gets a bit long but I refer you over to there
18:35
for the comparisons let me think of a merrow 17 Puma magnified nitro 2 cloud
18:42
monster Nova blast 4 and several others and also please consider given the
18:49
holidays are coming soon checking out our custom fractal road trail run
18:55
buckets okay so with the speed board now on the bottom and the foam we own
19:04
foam softer and of course with the new cloud tech face elements the main thing
19:11
I'm feeling is obviously softer but up front compared to the monster I feel I'm
19:20
sinking in a little bit more not a lot and my toes are sort of more in the game
19:25
there's more of a smoother rocker effect and less noise in the monster as I go
19:34
down they go off more pleasant now you won't mistake either for a super soft
19:43
the monster is a bit firmer bit more reactive and our new cloud eclipse is
19:56
smoother flowing easier to turn over that also applies to the heel as well
20:04
coming off the heel a little quicker in our okay okay let's talk about
20:10
comparative fit here between our two on to the max cushion variety first the
20:17
monster in in blue is a half size up for my normal whereas the eclipse is
20:24
absolutely true to size so here's what I'm noticing in the monster the toe toe
20:31
area front of the toe is definitely pointier and lower I think the mesh as
20:38
you can see is also considerably almost you'd say heavier and here we have many
20:45
more ventilation holes so it may not be as much about short as this denser mesh
20:51
whereas here this has some give now as we move to the midfoot very interesting
20:57
you can see we have a new lacing scheme with those straps to hold our thinner
21:03
mesh up whereas here we had one two three three essentially for lace loops
21:09
here in total we have five including I would say the front one there the front
21:14
with the yellow and red so what happens is it's kind of wrapping your foot very
21:20
consistently through the midfoot secure and more comfortable and actually I think a little more secure there than in our monster as we move to the rear
21:31
things change a little bit I'm finding the Eclipse not quite as secure as the
21:38
monster not sure exactly why but it's it's plenty fine and remember this is
21:44
true to size and this is a half size up so moderately wide Eclipse with as you
21:52
can see with the strapping system the ability I think to give wider feet some
21:57
give we do have a gusset tongue and see it's a very nicely done tongue here
22:03
kind of a knit type material but we have not one but two let me see if I can find
22:11
them one two to pass through so I think that also helps with that kind of very
22:19
smooth secure hold all in all super fine uppers but this one is an evolution
22:25
similar to the cloud latest cloud surfer which was also excellent I'm
22:31
gonna head back to the barn beautiful thank you very much for watching have a
22:38
great run
