Today we're going to take a look at the Brooks Glycerin 23 releasing in early February and the Adidas Supernova Rise 3, which is out now
0:08
They are very similar in a lot of ways, stack height, platform width, but also very different in significant ways
0:15
I'm going to try to help you decide which you might choose. Similar in so many ways that I took them out on an AB run and here is what I found
0:24
hello everybody sam from road trail run today we're in park city and we're going to take a look
0:30
at two daily trainers the february releasing 170 brooks glycerin 23 and the out now adidas
0:41
supernova rise 3 i'm going to actually take them out on an a b run because they are very similar
0:48
in a lot of respects in terms of stack height. We're at 3830 for the Brooks and we're at
0:56
3729 for the Adidas. However, there are some big differences, most notably weight and price
1:06
The Adidas, even though its platform is about the same, it's five millimeters narrow at the midfoot
1:12
weighs 254 grams in this US 8.5 sample or 8.96 ounces. And the Glycerin weighs 36 grams more
1:27
as it comes in at 10.44 ounces, 296 grams. Both shoes are updated. The Glycerin gets
1:38
two millimeters more stack height in the forefoot, whereas the Adidas gets one and a half millimeters
1:47
more in the heel and three and a half in the forefoot. The DreamStrike plus Piba Piba Blend
1:55
foam in the Supernova Rise is said to be 20% softer and 20% bouncier than in version two
2:02
So they're below kind of max cushion kind of heights. And they both have, let me get this right, eight millimeter drops. So they're very, very similar. Why the weight difference? Well, over here in the Adidas, we have a Piba blend foam
2:23
whereas in the Brooks we have DNA-tuned, a dual kind of density foam with smaller bubbles up front
2:34
bigger bubbles for kind of response, bigger bubbles at the rear. I think it's a nitrogen-infused EVA
2:43
So I have one on each foot. I can tell you the Brooks is a little bit more plush and feel a little roomier
2:51
It will be available in wide and extra wide. The Adidas should be available in wide
2:57
It has a more kind of performance oriented fit a little bit lower volume through here It has the let see what do they call it The prime weave upper kind of a knit upper soft
3:14
not quite as luxurious as this incredible triple jacquard warp knit in the Brooks
3:21
And the Brooks has more volume through the, right in here, I can feel a bit more height
3:26
You can see the height of the toe box, but both are very comfortable, although I think a higher volume foot will probably benefit from the Brooks a bit more
3:38
It's got really, really deep bolsters. You can see really deep round laces
3:45
The tongue is very similar, actually. The Adidas is sort of a padded mesh
3:51
This isn't one of those leatherette tongues. The Adidas, I think, has kind of a neat padded tongue because it sort of combines more kind of leatherette, but it's a plasticky material with lots of nice pads, flat laces
4:07
More than decent padding at the rear. In terms of the outsoles, both are trying with their outsole to provide a bit of stability
4:20
I think durability should be excellent for both of them. In terms of the rubber, the blue feels about the same as the green, including at the heel in the Adidas
4:36
Whereas in the Brooks, we have very, very firm rubber at the heel
4:41
We have this section through here, which I think will improve stability
4:47
So for those who have mild stability needs may be able to get away with this instead of the more, I won't call it extreme, but the more kind of supportive GTS version
4:59
You can see the green is the smaller bubbles with the white is the larger one
5:05
So more response, more landing cushion. This is a very substantial outsole
5:11
So I'm going to take them out for a run here in Park City. it's absolutely a beautiful day i'm going to go a b in the neighborhood here and give you some
5:21
commentary from the run stay tuned let's talk a bit about fit that's pc hill above the high school
5:27
the kids build that thing every year keep it white now in terms of our relative fit both are true to
5:36
size. The Glycerin 23's upper has clearly a bit more volume. Hold is good. There's no gusset in
5:46
the tongue. I think it maybe could use one. Midfoot hold isn't quite as solid as in the
5:52
Supernova Rise. The Supernova Rise upper is not quite as plush, but very close, you know
5:59
for the $30 difference. Often uppers are a big part of the cost. This is one fine upper
6:05
you can see the mesh is quite dense I think they breathe okay That my true to size eight and a half maybe a teeny touch short but I not going to change Whereas over here in the brooks
6:19
a little bit longer, not much. That's my toe there. That's my toe there. They're about the same
6:25
Bit more midfoot volume clearly in the brooks, but both are very comfortable
6:30
I think the hold on this more conventional collar is a little bit better, not quite as comfortable
6:37
maybe as the Brooks, but still mighty fine Let's keep going That's looking across towards the Canyon Ski Resort
6:47
So a few comments about the ride so far The Adidas is a little firmer
6:56
a little quicker, kind of responding actually a bit flatter feel through the midfoot, maybe a bit more support, whereas the glycerin
7:10
is a bit softer, a bit smoother actually in transition, a bit bouncier. It is an EVA
7:21
nitrogen EVA versus a Piva, and usually a nitrogen EVA tends to be bouncier than a Piva
7:29
That's what I'm feeling here. Both are smooth. Feels just more shoe in the glycerin 23, whereas the Adidas is kind of a quicker reacting option
7:48
I'm going to keep going. I'm having a pretty sad snow year here in Park City, but the running has been great
7:57
We're about a little above freezing. I'm actually running at shorts. It's super sunny here at 6,800
8:04
feet. So I just came down a little hill. The both are stable for sure. I would call them stable
8:14
neutral shoes as opposed to straight up neutral because they do have that reinforced
8:22
midfoot rubber. The Adidas is a little slappier, a little quicker reacting than the
8:38
Glycerin 23. For me, the Glycerin 23 is liable to be more of a
8:46
recovery run shoe. In the Brooks line, I prefer the daily trainer, the
8:53
Hyperion 3. And in Adidas, really, they haven't had very many or last several years
9:04
what I would call decent regular daily trainers. They a Adizero Boston 13 with its plate fine shoe for tempo But this is your all for regular old daily training They going to have a more stability solution version but I don think
9:31
very many will really, really need that. I actually wear tested it early for Adidas, and
9:39
I thought it had plenty of stability it's a really nice update as is the Glycerin 23
9:48
two millimeters more in the forefoot so I'd say the Glycerin 23 is a little bit more
9:57
slower paces friendly than the Adidas the Adidas I think drives you to push a bit
10:02
both are really good and if you like kind of a firmer more quickly responding ride even though
10:11
by no means this is a firm shoe or an old EVA shoe you want to go the Adidas if you want
10:16
more plush basically the same idea same amount of cushion a bit softer a bit more plush upper
10:23
you go with the Brooks oh some conclusions with scenery so this really comes down to
10:30
a couple key factors in terms of which to choose. For sure, 8.96 ounces, 254 grams in the U.S.
10:40
8.5 versus 10.44 or 290 grams in the glycerin. The Adidas is a lighter and snappier shoe
10:51
There's also the factor of price. We're at 170 for our glycerin versus 140 for the Adidas
11:00
I would say that the Glycerin 23 has a plusher, softer, kind of more pleasant ride than the Adidas
11:13
That comes down to the Piba Blend Foam here is more reactive, kind of quicker going
11:19
This shoe, I think, favors a bit faster paces, whereas the Glycerin is a bit friendlier at slower paces
11:26
the upper is definitely plusher, a bit roomier in the Glycerin versus the Adidas
11:34
There's definitely more room. Not quite as well held as in the Adidas, but I have a narrower to medium kind of volume foot
11:45
Both are excellent options, so it comes down to kind of the plush, softer daily trainer
11:52
they can also for me do recovery runs versus the more up-tempo flavor daily trainer but not really
12:00
up-tempo more kind of faster pace friendly thank you very much for watching we're going to have
12:07
we do have a supernova rise 3 review and we will on roadtrailrun.com and we'll soon have a
12:16
glycerin 23 and also the support version so please stay tuned
